"There was a boy who used to sit in the twilight and listen to his great aunt's stories. She told him if he could reach the place where the end of the rainbow stands, he would find there a golden key. 'And what is the key for?' The boy would ask. 'What is it the key of? What does it open?' 'Ah, that nobody knows.' replied his aunt. 'He has to find that out.'" ~from "The Golden Key"

This tale is the adventure that Mossy goes on in search of where the rainbow stands. The word "know" here clues me in to MacDonald's meaning. The finding out that Love is obedience. "Knowing" is when you experience love. "Finding out" is when you do it.
